My Six Months in Jakarta: Adjusting, Growing, and Embracing the Unknown

Where to begin? I’ve officially been in Jakarta for half a year, and it’s been an experience that’s humbling and exciting, challenging and inspiring. It feels like a whirlwind, a blend of emotions that I’m only just beginning to sort through. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I’m here, in a new country, living a life that I once dreamed about from what felt like a whole world away. I prayed to live internationally for 5 whole years before it happened.

Jakarta is alive. It’s vibrant, bustling, and so full of life that every day brings something new. It’s easy to get swept up in the energy, and while it can be overwhelming, it’s also very motivating. There are the smells of street food in the air, the sounds of motorcycles, and the warm smiles from people who have been nothing but welcoming. The city moves fast so you must jump in, adapt, and find your own rhythm & flow.

The transition to a new life here has come with its own set of challenges. Moving across the world is something I dreamed of, but dreams don’t always account for the small details of everyday life. Simple things, like navigating the language barrier or figuring out where to buy groceries, become mini-adventures. Sometimes it’s fun, but sometimes it’s humbling and even frustrating. Each of these moments teaches me something, pushes me to adapt, and reminds me of why I’m here.

One of the hardest parts has been missing my family and friends back home. There’s a unique kind of loneliness that comes with being in a completely new place, far away from what you once knew. And while there’s so much beauty here, there are days when all I want is the comfort of something familiar. Everytime I start to feel that ache, I remind myself of the purpose behind this journey. I spend time with the wonderful people I’ve met here or look to my hubby for a little more love. I chose this path to step outside of the norm and embrace life in a way that to me, is so much more enriching.

Every day, I’m building a new home here, with connections to new friends. Taking up new hobbies. Traveling to different places in the area. Trying new foods and so much more. && Yes it’s safe for US 🙂✊🏾

Thanks for being here with me, sharing in this journey. Whether you’re in your own season of change or just following along from afar, I hope this inspires you to lean into whatever adventure life is bringing your way. Here’s to more discovery, more growth, and finding beauty in the unexpected. For those who have been there from the beginning, I officially have 1.5 years left in Jakarta before the next adventure takes place!
