DC City Girl Life

DC Life Be Like….

Alright, let’s talk about being a DC city girl. There’s a whole vibe there, one that’s hard to describe unless you’ve lived it. DC has this energy, this grit, that you just don’t find everywhere. The city feels like it’s moving even when you’re standing still, like ambition and history are pulsing in the air. And while there’s a lot to love, let me just say this….DC isn’t winning any awards for its food or for the people's attitudes.

Sure, you can find a good spot here and there, but: if you’re looking for soul food, flavors that hit different, or anything close to the best eats, you’re gonna have to search. The energy in the city screamed a bit stand-offish from a midwesterner like me. People here, they want to know who you are, where you work, how much you make, before they even let you all the way in. It’s like everyone’s sizing each other up, trying to figure out if you’re worth their time. I noticed this when I visited back in 2023, there's an unspoken rule you have to come correct, you have to have something going on, or at least look like you do. It can feel like you’re constantly proving yourself, just to be seen, just to get a seat at the table. After living in both Atlanta and Houston, it was easy for me to adapt to that type of energy however DC carries that without the charisma and charm. It forced me to really learn how to hold my own. I worked hard, networked, got in shape, and finished 6 months of intense training.

I had the privilege of staying in one of the nicest apartments I've ever stayed in my life. It felt like I made it when I would hang out on the rooftop 30 floors high. I had so many memorable moments in DC, some good, bad and even ugly, however I am forever grateful for the experience.

Being a DC city girl to me means you learn to keep up. You adapt quick, you find your spots, your people, your routines, you can't be afraid to explore, find new hobbies, meet new people and really put yourself out there regardless of the energy. Although DC is no joke on the wallet, you pay for the ease of being able to walk to work, home, dinner monuments, and other leisure for sure. While I never say never, sorry folks I probably wouldn't settle there for life.
